This fall brings us another Sing Around Nebraska HONOR CHOIR. Our event, open by audition to 5th and 6th grade students, will be held at Nebraska Wesleyan University on Nov. 7 (evening) and Nov. 8 (all day). Our clinician will be Dr. Rollo Dilworth.
Repertoire for the honor choir, chosen by the clinician, will be:
The Dream Keeper – Text by Langston Hughes, Music by Rollo Dilworth
2-part and piano with optional string bass and congas (or djembe)
Hal Leonard Henry Leck Choral Series (HL 08745611)
I Dream A World – Text by Langston Hughes, Music by Rollo Dilworth
3-part treble and piano with optional instrumental accompaniment
Hal Leonard Henry Leck Choral Series (HL 08745612)
These two selections are from Dilworth’s “Trilogy of Dreams”, with texts by Langston Hughes. “The Dream Keeper” is quite accessible to a two-part choir, with a single note ostinato against a step-wise melody much of the time. The remainder of the piece is in unison.
“I Dream a World” is a bit more challenging, with a 3-part voicing and a gospel style. Harmonies are generally in thirds.
During the Sing Around Nebraska Honor Choir, we plan to perform these with chamber ensemble.
Two by Vivaldi (both movements) – Antonio Vivaldi, ed. Janet Galvan
Piano and optional string quartet
1. Ex exultavit (unison)
2. Esurientes (2-part)

Although these will be the choir’s “challenge pieces”, I believe they will end up being favorites of many of the singers. Both are challenging because of the latin text and challenging melodic lines, it’s Vivaldi. The world needs more performances of Vivaldi.
Star, Forever Gone – Text by Sara Teasdale, Music by Judith Herrington
3-part treble, piano and cello
Colla Voce 20-95880
This is a beautiful piece of music. Minor key, voices in three parts, beautiful cello line, very singable step-wise melody of a haunting nature. I am so looking forward to hearing this performed by children’s voices.
Children of Light – Music by Valerie Webdell, ed. Ruth Dwyer
2-part and piano (optional strings)
Colla Voce 24-96850
I have had the privilege of performing this piece with the community children’s choir I work with. Beautiful message, beautiful melody. There are many opportunities here for expressive singing and artistic phrasing.
The Duel – Lyrics by Eugene Fields, Music by Cristi Cary Miller
2-part and piano
Hal Leonard (HL 08551304)
I was pleased when I saw this on Dr. Dilworth’s list. It also was a piece from the 2013-2014 Sing Around Nebraska festivals across the state, and those singers loved it! It presents some diction challenges, but many opportunities for musicianship!
I teach PreK-5 General Music for the Hastings Public Schools (Morton and Longfellow Elementary Schools) as well as adjunct music education courses for Hastings College. I also assist with the South Central Nebraska Children's Chorale, in residence at Hastings College, and and the Director of Traditional Music at First United Methodist Church in Hastings, where I direct the Chancel Choir and the JuBELLation Handbell Choir. Most importantly, I'm a husband to Amy and dad to Grace.
